Being a nurse, I have a heart to help the poor in practical ways. The Chinese proverb, Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime, rings true with me. I am all about helping people help themselves. I want them to realize they can rise up out of the poverty many of them were born into. To me, it is the Gospel in action. You can't expect a person to come to the Lord if his stomach is empty, or if his children are in need of clothing.

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled, but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. James 2:14-18 nkjv

Sometimes Rick and I are overwhelmed by the grinding poverty we see in the region of our call. We often talk of the unfairness of the distribution of wealth and resources in the world. We know that we cannot meet everyone's need but we do know that we must do what we can to help those the Lord puts in our lives.
