Unprecedented Attacks on Indian Christians The anti-Christian violence in India is escalating to shocking levels and beginning to spread to other regions of the continent. Violent, irrational Hindu extremists have launched inhumane attacks on innocent defenseless believers, many times singling out women, children and even the handicapped. Following are two letters from dear pastor friends of mine in India. I did not include their names since things are a little volatile in India at the moment. Greetings from India! I am writing to request your fervent prayer for our nation. Some of you may be aware of the incidents of persecution in the states of Orissa and now Karnataka. There seems to be a battle for the soul of this nation and we know that the Lord has great plans in these end days. The Christians in Orissa who have had loved ones killed (over 30), their homes burnt (over 1000), churches destroyed and thousands are living in refugee camps or hiding in the forests. The threat from fundamentalists is to rid the state of Christians and to convert them back to Hinduism. The churches in Karnataka are facing a wave of attacks on the church buildings. In South Karnataka the independent churches are called New Life because ours was the first independent church to grow and take root there. Only 2 of our church buildings were vandalized but there is a demand by the opposition to ban New Life. If that takes place, it will affect our network of churches. Pray for the believers who are being threatened in this state. There is a national election coming up in 6 months and Hindu fundamentalists are bringing up the issue of Conversion to make it an election issue and grab the attention of the people. The allegation is that we use fraudulent means to convert poor. The truth we know is that the Holy Spirit is moving and God is touching people in healing and deliverance opening their eyes to the gospel. In one incident a mob of 120 barged into a home meeting and roughed up a few people and threatened them. Thankfully the police intervened and the meeting continued the following week. An emergency meeting is being held in Mumbai and I am going there tomorrow morning. Please pray for Gods wisdom and for grace for all of us. - Pastor The following is from a highly respected senior pastor in west India: Dear leaders, We are indeed living in exciting days like in the book of Acts. The church is growing rapidly in the midst of persecution. The words of Jesus are being fulfilled as we see in the lives of the apostles. Peter was imprisoned, Paul was stoned... I would like to encourage you to stand firm in the faith to which we have been called. I urge you to be like minded and call your congregations to corporate prayer and encourage prayer in the cell churches in this hour of trial. We pray for a greater boldness and courage to proclaim the gospel with wisdom and in the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts Chapter 4) We have the great commission before us and a heavenly mandate to fulfill. He has promised us His presence as we go in His name. In the process, let us be sensitive in the communities that we proclaim the Good News. Let us not print and distribute any literature that will hurt the religious sentiments of any groups. In our preaching, let us focus on the good news and refrain from touching on any other religion. Be sure to know who you water baptize. Screen all your workers personally. Ensure all your books of accounts and transactions are up to date and carried out in a spirit of excellence by your team. Those running projects sponsored by friends and donors need to give special attention to the books of accounts and adhere to the highest form of accounting procedures. Let us be prepared in season and out of season so that we can defend our faith (Acts 26) at all times. Strengthen and multiply your cell group base and raise up as many lay leaders as possible as days are evil. Let us work hard while there is still light, very soon it will be dark when no man can work. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, says the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, says the LORD of hosts. Haggai 2:9 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Pastor The Silent Western Press The Western press has ignored this issue.
