Amazing Growth in Mumbai
If you have not seen the movie Slumdog Millionaire, you should. It’s a fairly accurate portrayal of life in Mumbai, India and a moving story of survival in one of India’s infamous slums.
Since the early 1990’s I have ministered to the leaders of a powerful congregation that has been steadily emerging in the city of Bombay. In 2,000 we stepped up our involvement with New Life Church and begin to help them train leaders to launch small house churches. Some of these fledgling congregations are modest while others have grown into significant churches that now rent their own buildings.
The transformation of the New Life work has been astounding and they are now beginning to move into true multiplication. The graph below illustrates New Life’s growth over the past eight years—from 9,000 believers to over 51,000 believers in Mumbai alone!
Bev and I have focused the past three years on Nepal and the Lord has given us wonderful fruit there with over 100 churches. We will continue the emphasis on Nepal in 2009 but we believe the Lord is leading us to turn our attention back to the city of Mumbai and help to consolidate the leadership base in the rapidly growing work. We are leaning toward spending at least three months in Mumbai next year and plan to host a major leader’s conference in early 2011.
