Nepal
The political instability remains constant in Nepal. 2009 saw the fall of the Maoist government. Religious persecution stepped up a notch as a bomb was detonated at a Catholic church near Katmandu. But the Gospel in Nepal is advancing to never before reached areas. In March, CompassionAsia began to care for 15 blind children in the remote region of Jumla. This came to be known as the Jumla Project. Along side the Jumla Project, a new church building was dedicated in the area. Many miraculous signs took place during the several days of festivities for the building dedication. Later in the year, nearly 5,000 Christians attended our conference hosted by Pastor KB Basel in Nepagunj. This was truly a historic event since a majority of the people were first generation Christians from unreached people groups.
Pakistan
Four years ago in a ghetto just outside of Islamabad, a new church was planted by ChurchAsia. That church has now grown to 1,200 members and is the fastest growing church in Pakistan. People sit on the roof to hear the message when there is no more room in the building. There were nearly 500 bombings in Pakistan last year, most of which were in or around Islamabad. Please pray for the church there as Christians are increasingly becoming the target of radical terrorists.
Sri Lanka
2009 brought the end of a 26 year civil war in Sri Lanka, and renewed a hope for peace in a war weary country. The church we started with Pastor Dishan just eight years ago has become a center of influence. Bethany Christian Life Centre has grown to 750 in attendance and oversees 40 other churches. Pastors in the Colombo area have begun to look to Pastor Dishan for leadership training. The Church will further expand their reach with several new church plants this year.
