May 25th, 2010SRI LANKA CYCLONE UPDATEThanks to all who responded over the weekend. We wired $4,000 to our main congregation in Colombo yesterday. That was enough to provide 5,300 meals. Another $2,500 was committed by this morning. We will be sending those funds within the next few days. Our church members and leaders are working around the clock to cook, rescue stranded elderly people and coordinate relief with the local police and city government. One of our leaders gave this description of his visit to an elderly woman's home... I remember walking in that water and when we came to a certain house, I found an old mother who could not walk. She was sleeping on a broken bed and the water was almost to her head. She smiled at me and said, I can't walk so I had to wait here. I received this brief report from Pastor Dishan this morning... Dear Sister Bev, Thanks for your support. We are working this whole week in our church areas and it is just terrible. We are planning to do more work with the minister and police officers in the days to come. This disaster is similar to the Tsunami in the number of people affected. The news is reporting 600,000 people flooded. I will send more updates later. This is a great time to touch people and meet their needs. Blessings, Dishan The rapid response in manpower and resources by our congregation will reap benefits for years to come. Our response in 2005 to the Tsunami disaster helped to give us an open door to powerful Sri Lankan parliament members. And this current effort is helping to deepen that relationship. This is very important for our future since there continues to be a strong and coordinated effort by the Buddhist leaders to persecute the growing Christian community. When we seize opportunities like this to demonstrate Christ-like compassion, we win the hearts of the people and help them understand the motivation of love. Thanks for standing with us in faith as we work to make a difference in Sri Lanka. Bev Zachary
