SRI LANKA CYCLONE UPDATE

Thanks to the rapid response many of you have made, we are wiring funds every two days to Sri Lanka for the Cyclone relief effort. Yesterday I shared with you how the community is expressing their gratitude and of the doors that are opening to us in the local and national government.

Another benefit we are seeing is that this crisis is serving as a rallying cry for our church members. Pastor Dishan has been leading a weekly business men's meeting that has grown to about 50 business leaders. Some of them are quite influential, and they are all highly motivated men. Rick ministered to them on his recent trip to Colombo and was impressed with the quality of the group.

These men are stepping up to help in the relief work and are making significant contributions toward helping the needy. When we join our resources with theirs, we more than double our compassion investment.

To date, we have received about $9,000 toward this effort. Things are happening so quickly that I have to update our figures daily but as of last night we had distributed: 1 ton of rice, 1,300 pounds of sugar, 660 pounds of onions, 330 pounds of dal (very nutritious lentil) 330 pounds of soy meat, 100 packets of milk, 66 pounds of tea, (Sri Lankans must have tea :), 150 cooking sets, 600 plates and cups and 200 prepared packets of rice!

This as been an amazing experience and we are so proud of our leaders for the way they have quickly acted. Rick and I have found that mature leadership does not necessarily emerge in crisis but it does take charge. In other words, there must be leadership in place before the crisis in order for leaders to function effectively. What we are witnessing is a strong leadership base, responding appropriately to an unanticipated emergency need.

Thanks for all you have done to enable us to be a part of this significant moment in the history of our Colombo church.
