Sophia Primary School
We are helping K.B. and Sushila Basel to develop a school in Nepalgunj, Nepal, near the India border. At this point we have 92 students in grades K-4. We are hoping to add a grade each year. Many of the students are children of our pastors from the villages and there is very little opportunity for them to have a quality education in the remote areas they live in. One of the difficulties in establishing churches in the villages is that leaders are reluctant to stay when their children need education. Many capable village pastors are lost to the cities as they migrate there for the sake of their children's education.
KB&Sushila
KB and Sushila Basel direct Sophia Primary School and are its founders. They also pastor the church located on the mission compound and oversee a growing number of village churches. K.B. was an educator before he received the call to the ministry and is extremely capable in heading up an educational institution. His dream is to grow the school into a Christ centered campus that offers a first rate education for grades K-12.
Children Sponsorship
The children that come from the villages require feeding as well as school expenses. We have classified them as Category One. These students need $40 a month to cover food, uniform, shoes, stationary, books and school fees. The students in Category Two live in Nepalgunj and come from very poor families. They do not require food but only need help for their school expenses. To sponsor these students is $20 per month.
There are students in the school who come from middle income families. These students' families are able to pay full tuition for their children and the fees they pay have helped to bring the school to its present stage of development. As the school's reputation grows it is becoming a desirable place for Nepali parents to enroll their children and the quality is improving each year.
Campus
The buildings are made of mud brick and plaster, the roofs are grass. It doesn't look like much but it's a good insulation in the hot months when the temperature can easily exceed 110 Fahrenheit! Rooms are kept tidy and clean and the overall environment of the grounds is very pleasing.
We have purchased additional property that adjoins the rear of our current property and we will be constructing a main church building there. This will allow the school to expand toward the front of the property where the church in now located.
Classrooms
Each class has their own room with desks and chairs. The materials and the books in the library are pretty sparse but it's a beginning. Many of the children come in pedal driven "school busses" and though they are not exactly safe, they're a good low-cost alternative until we grow to the point where we can provide a bus.
Sponsorship
Following are backgrounds on each of the children. If you would like to sponsor a child, fill out the online form at the bottom of this page and we will get back to you by email within one week.
